Rats!! Who Knew??

It all started innocently enough. My son's teacher sent home a paper telling everyone that the class "warm fuzzies" needed a home for the holidays. I was to give my permission for my son to 'enter the lottery' so that he might be one of the lucky students to win the honor of bringing these "warm fuzzies" home.

I signed the paper.... Dun Dun Dunnnn!!! I never even asked what the class "warm fuzzies" were. I just assumed they were hamsters or gerbils. Needless to say, my son won. I pick him up from school and the teacher hands me a cage.... with 2 male Siamese rats in it. I was speechless. Now I understood why she called them "warm fuzzies". She was afraid no mom would say YES, if she asked, "can our RATS come stay at your house?" lol. So anyway, Heckle and Jeckal arrive at our house and it didn't take long at all for me to forget that I didn't like rats. I couldn't believe how interactive and affectionate they were. Every time I walked into the room, they clamored for attention. Before long I was walking around with treats in my bathrobe pocket so I could sneak them one :-) And then I skipped the middleman and walked around with rats in my pocket lol. I always had hamsters and gerbils when I was a kid. These friendly little guys were nothing like them. I was in love. And then the holiday was over. I had to give them back. :-( I was so lost. How in the world could I ever do housework again without a rattie in my pocket? I had to have my own.

And I guess the rest is history. I got my first little girls from a pet store. But the more rattie research I did, the more I was convinced that I wanted to get a rat from a breeder. That turned out to be almost impossible here in Texas. It was because of that fruitless and frustrating search that I decided to breed. I think that everyone should have access to beautiful, healthy, socialized ratties. :o)

And so, Warm Fuzzies Rattery was born. I will always breed on a small scale. I never want to get so crowded that I don't have time to devote to each individual rat. We're not a business; we're just a family. All of our rats are our pets. And occasionally, we allow two of our pets to breed, making wonderful pets for someone new. :o)
